Gorky's autobiographical trilogy, which sheds light on a very important period of Russian history extending from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, is actually the story of his effort to understand and make sense of himself and the world he lives in. This effort depicts Gorky, who is now in his adolescence and starting out in life, in While Earning My Bread. It brings him face to face with the harsh reality of 19th Century Russia. At the end of the first book of the trilogy, My Childhood, after he is released into the world with the words "Go and join the people" by his grandfather, he works in many different jobs, from errand boy to dishwasher, from catching birds to apprenticeship in an iconography workshop. We accompany this child of the people at different stops of his sad life journey, and meet many extraordinarily lively characters who will later inspire his works. We travel with him in the dream world where he escapes from reality through books, but is ready to abandon it when duty calls.
