San Francisco, 1906: Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong was determined to save her brother Jack from the squalor of Chinatown. That's why St. She set out to study at Clare Girls' School. St. Petersburg does not accept students except the daughters of wealthy families. Although Clare was too far out of her reach, Mercy managed to get herself accepted into the school through cunning and bribery. But that was the easy part. Because while Mercy was struggling to cope with the students of the school, a disaster occurred.

On April 18, San Francisco was shaken by a historic earthquake. Mercy's home and school were destroyed. Since martial law was imposed, he was forced to wait for his friends' families in a temporary camp. But even as the flames roared and the city became a battlefield, Mercy would not wait for the army to bring help. But what could a young girl do to heal the suffering and loss in her ruined city?

“An emotional, entertaining and fascinating book that brings San Francisco of 1906 to life!”

-Cynthia Kadohata, author of the Newbery Medal-winning novels The Happiness Words and the National Book Award-winning author The Thing About Luck

“It's full of puns! Fans of historical fiction should definitely read it: powerful, moving and thought-provoking.”

-KIRKUS REVIEWS, starred review

“Immersive and striking. Mercy Wong stole my heart from the first page.”

-Sabaa Tahir, New York Times bestselling author of Ashes and Embers

“Lee creates characters whose depth and nuance are historically accurate, yet still relatable to today's youth… A quirky and compelling novel not to be missed.”

-School Library Journal

“Lee adds some intriguing historical detail, as well as the discrimination that existed at the time, to tell the heartwarming, powerful story of a community united during an earth-shattering disaster.”

-BOOKLIST

“Despite her impulsiveness, Mercy is a very believable character who encourages readers to chase their dreams.”

-VOYA

“It is not often that one encounters a true examination of time and place in historical fiction.” Publishers Weekly

“Mercy is a tremendous narrator; Her courage and sense of humor make the intense discrimination she faces all the more shocking. Historical fiction readers will not be able to put this book down.”

-Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“Stacey Lee has an astonishing voice and may have outdone even herself with her new book, Catch Your Dreams.”
