Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)

In Still Don, one of the masterpieces of Russian and world literature, Mikhail Sholokhov builds his narrative on historical documents while describing Russian life before and after the revolution, especially the Cossacks who continued their loyalty to feudal values and the tsar.

However, this great work, which brought the Nobel Prize to its author, is definitely not a "docu-novel". While conveying historical events objectively, Sholokhov drew very vivid portraits, developed strong characters that reflected the characteristics of the land and period in which they lived, and examined individual and social relations with intense attention.

As the pages of the novel progress, we understand that the Kazakhs, who have an artificially created hostility towards those on the opposing side, are actually aware that they live in a changing world.

This great work was translated into Turkish as a product of the joint and intense efforts of our three translators. Hasan Ali Ediz compared the translation made by Mete Ergin and Gani Yener with the Russian original. Readers will enjoy the brilliant literary style of Sholokhov, who fuses Russian folk literature with Russian classical literature, in this meticulous translation...

“In the past, they used to equip the Cossacks who completed their military service in the Ataman Regiment when they sent them home. Cossacks loaded their chests, horses and belongings onto the train. The train sets off, just as it reaches Voronezh, where the line first crosses the Don, the engineer would make the train heavier... As soon as the train reaches the bridge... Wow, my father, wow! What to see! The Kazakhs went completely crazy: 'Frost! Frost! Still Don! Our father, our Don! Hurrah!' And out of the windows, over the bridge and into the water, caps, old shirts, trousers, undershirts and God knows what else would fly! They gave Don gifts in honor of his return from military service. Sometimes it happened that when you looked at the water, you would see the blue caps of the Ataman Regiment floating like swans or flowers... This is a very old custom.”
