"From the agonistic point of view, the main category of democratic politics is the category of 'dissident', who adhere to the democratic principles of 'freedom and equality for all', but differ on their interpretation. Although the opponents struggle to make their interpretation of these principles hegemonic, the legitimacy of their opponents' struggle for the victory of their own positions is "This encounter between opponents is a must for a vibrant democracy, a condition for the existence of 'agonistic struggle'."
-Chantal Mouffe-

One of the most effective slogans of the last century was "There is no alternative!" This slogan was put into effect to devalue and ignore all alternative options. This view, which declared the eternal victory of only the political currents and projects that could achieve hegemony at the time, against all possible proposals, was taken for granted. In Thinking About the World Politically, Chantal Mouffe continues to discuss the possibilities of waging a political struggle for the 'dissidents' who have been reduced to the point of having no say in the face of neo-liberal projects. By addressing points such as the establishment of hegemony, negotiation and considering the political conflict to be resolved by consensus, it discusses why political hegemony based on the 'consensus' reached after the conflict is an incomplete democratic understanding. It shows that not all 'dissenting' views can necessarily be persuaded during a moment of consensus. Mouffe reveals how vital this is for the idea of democratic coexistence, through examples such as the EU, nationalism, alternative globalization movements, and art practices, within the framework of the agonistic approach she has been developing since Hegemony and Socialist Strategy, which she wrote with Laclau.
