Family, City and Population from Past to Present
The change that Turkey has undergone since the 1980s has produced social, cultural, economic and historical results. It is possible to see these changes and the impact they have in social life. However, in order to understand and analyze what is visible, it is necessary to create historical comparison opportunities with field research, data and a comprehensive evaluation framework in which this information can be used. Family, City and Population, a compilation of Ferhunde Özbay's articles covering a period of 30 years, offers this opportunity to comprehend the change and transformation. In Özbay's works, class, gender, power and labor find a place together in a historical perspective. The articles of Ferhunde Özbay, who passed away in 2015, each of which was developed with detailed studies and field research, offer a comprehensive breakdown of the "teacher"'s contribution to the literature with her perspectives on population sociology, including critical demography. Since the beginning of the Republic, changes in the population structure have been described by the governments as a problem with social and mostly economic concerns. Solutions generally aimed at empowering men, dominant cultural groups, and the upper classes. The "problem" areas determined by governments based on the relations between population and social structure are more comprehensive than the topics I have included here. When the process of re-establishing welfare services and the policies adopted in this process are followed, more and more intense effort is needed to see and demonstrate the unlimited and frightening dimensions of "population engineering". I hope that the questions I ask in this book and the answers I have sought over the years will inspire research against increasingly complex techniques of power.
