The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900): Irish genius writer. With his literary intelligence, subtle sarcasm and extraordinary life during the Victorian era, he became the most well-known representative of the 19th century aestheticism movement in Britain. In addition to his poems, stories and plays, he became famous for The Picture of Dorian Gray. As a result of the strict moral understanding of the period, he was tried for his sexual orientation and sentenced to two years in prison. He died in poverty in Paris three years after his release. The Picture of Dorian Gray is Wilde's only novel that caused great controversy in its time, was subjected to very harsh criticism in exchange for little praise, and was even used as evidence against him during his trial. As the author states in his preface, which can be read as a manifesto of "art for art's sake", it is the pinnacle of literary works in which evil and virtue are used as artistic material. Dorian Gray, whose wish for eternal youth and beauty is granted and who gradually moves away from the values that make a man human and becomes corrupt, achieves immortality with Wilde’s unparalleled narrative in world literature. The Picture of Dorian Gray has been adapted for the cinema many times and has inspired many branches of art.
