Between Nine and Nine, published in 1918, tells the story of Stanislaus Demba, an immigrant university student in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, trying to find his identity. Demba, who makes a living by giving private lessons, tries to find money to dissuade his girlfriend from going to Italy with another man. The novel tells the story of a day when he was desperately running around the city for this purpose. On the other hand, he is running away from the police, who narrowly escaped being caught when he was about to sell a valuable book he had previously stolen from the university library. Perutz satirizes life in the Vienna of the period, with its petty bourgeoisie, upper classes, scientists, intellectuals, gamblers and genteel thieves. It refers to the impact of elements such as misogyny, antisemitism and xenophobia on the identity and free will of the individual in this complex social environment.
