In this entertaining novella, where subtle irony permeates every line, Jules Verne satirizes the outdated lifestyles of the Flemish residents of a small city that lives disconnected from the world and has not severed its ties with the Middle Ages. The story was also the subject of the opera Doctor Ox by German-French composer Jacques Offenbach, and Verne himself contributed to the writing of the libretto.
