Doktor Faustus

Thomas Mann takes us through the tense world of a proud artist, composer Adrian Leverkühn, in his latest work, Doctor Faustus. Even though his soul is overflowing with the desire to create, Leverkühn's tension is the biggest obstacle to his power to create, as he cannot restrain his rational and unemotional temperament. The devil catches Leverkühn at this weak point: He makes the artist pay the price of getting rid of an existence that is doomed to remain meaningless without the expression of the creative mind, by making the artist fall into the grip of a venereal disease. This is a genius, a creativity that only evil can provide, and in Thomas Mann's aesthetics, it represents the poisoning of the people with fascism. This chronic political issue, which Mann interprets as the surrender of the developed social spirit to archaic primitiveness in the human body, whose threat is felt in the social field today as much as yesterday, appears in the novel on an individual level, creating a gap between the aesthetic spirit and bourgeois life.

This last great work of Mann, which has an undisputed place among the cults of world literature, is an artist's novel related to the Faust myth, a novel of an age or society, an experimental novel that aims to express music through language, or an epic narrative. It is so comprehensive because it can be read from different perspectives as an essay on art theory that spreads to all layers.
