Ninety-Five Theses
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Martin Luther (1483-1546): German theologian, composer, priest and monk who laid the foundations of the Reformation. He is the child of a middle-class family. He studied first at the Latin school in Magdeburg and then at the University of Erfurt. He received his doctorate in 1511 and taught theology and philosophy. In 1515 he became bishop regent in charge of the churches in Saxony and Thuringia. In 1517, he sent his Ninety-Five Theses criticizing indulgences to Albrecht von Brandenburg.
These theses soon spread to Germany, and then to Europe in a short period of two months. He laid the foundations of his own church and Protestantism with the important works he wrote. He translated the Bible into German and organized public worship services.
The first manifesto of the Reformation, which turned 500 in 2017, the Ninety-Five Theses, and Luther's letter to Albrecht von Brandenburg are in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series.
