Michel Foucault, who devoted most of his life to researching the discursive and practical processes through which the concept of the subject was established in the West, investigated in his works what historical and social roles categories such as madness, criminality, and disease played in the formation of the subject. The Thinker, on "The History of Sexuality" In his last years working as a professor, he turned his attention to the pre-modern period and attempted to trace the idea of the modern subject by turning to Ancient Greek and Latin texts. Continuing his usual meticulous work as a historian of thought, in his own words, Foucault relentlessly examined the texts written in those periods, investigating which issues related to the subject and the self came to the fore in these texts, which questions fell off the agenda over time, and which conceptual frameworks were established and dispersed. Telling the Truth offers us a very vivid example from this last period of Foucault. This text, consisting of the notes of the seminars given by the thinker at the University of California in 1983, is a work that reveals how Foucault tried to deal with the history of thought. Ancient Greece and Latin In this adventure dating back to the stoics, Foucault puts at the center a concept that he sees as extremely important, the concept of honest speech (parrhesia), and reveals the change that the concept has undergone. It leads to the issues of truth-subject relationship: What did it mean to express the truth in ancient Greece and Rome? How did the social context of telling the truth transform? What does it mean to move from a truth game in which the figure of Apollo is at the center to another truth game in which the figure of Socrates is at the center, that is, philosophy? How did man's relationship with truth shape his relationship with himself in this period? What role did philosophy as a way of life play here? All of these are some of the questions that Foucault seeks to answer very clearly in the six lectures you will find in this book. Telling the Truth is both meeting Foucault, seeing a creative form of working on history, and seeing the exciting work of a philosopher and historian in the history of thought. An indispensable book for those who want to accompany the journey. Number of Pages: 160Print Year: 2016Language: TurkishPublisher: Ayrıntı Yayınları
