Nature Design
RG Collingwood (1889-1943), one of the most important historical philosophers of the twentieth century, is known in our country and around the world especially for his work Design of History. Speculum Mentis, An Essay on Philosophical Method, and An Essay on Metaphysics are among his important books. Philosophy of history in particular occupied a central place in the debate in the 1950s and 1960s over the nature of explanation in the social sciences and whether the social sciences should ultimately be reduced to explanations in the natural sciences. In his 1945 The Conception of Nature, Collingwood discusses three important conceptions of nature in the context of their periodicity: Greek Cosmology, the Renaissance View of Nature, and the Modern View of Nature. Masterfully analyzing the great cosmologies of the past and his time, Collingwood brings these speculations to life by relating them to current science or the science that has an impact on them. The differentiation, enrichment and deepening of our understanding of nature is revealed by tracing the transitions between these three periods.
