- Among the Kurdish emirates of the eleventh century, the Emirate of Merwani is of great importance because the Merwanis directed the intense migration of Kurds to the west, a development that eventually made Diyarbekir the center of the region inhabited by Kurds. The independence of some emirates in the politically unstable conditions of that period led to economic development and a cultural golden age in those regions. Their assets remained in the region and were invested, for example, in military defence, road construction or water supply. From now on, Armenians, Assyrians and Kurds spread their political influence and cultural lifestyle in Diyarbekir. In this way, they endangered the dominant position of the old Arab upper crust. Especially in the first half of the eleventh century, both external conditions and the political activities of the Merwani rulers facilitated the rise of this Kurdish dynasty.
