Diyarbakır Oral Press History - Events People Newspapers Journalists Book Description Newspaper has been in the lives of human beings for centuries. The first newspapers that appeared in Central Europe in the 1610s talked about commercial activities. Unlike the first newspapers that would be published within the borders of the Ottoman Empire approximately two centuries later, these newspapers in Europe were, in a sense, established to meet the needs of the society. Approximately 30 years after the beginning of the history of the Turkish press, 'provincial newspapers' began to appear all over the Ottoman country. This is how the local press emerged. One of the 22 provincial newspapers published in this period was "Diyarbekir newspaper" (August 3, 1869). The newspaper's publication life, which started as a provincial newspaper, lasted 94 years. Diyarbakir press history, which started in 1869 with the Diyarbekir newspaper, has reached today with dozens of newspapers and magazines over the past 150 years. Today, more than 10 newspapers and various magazines are published in Diyarbakır. Diyarbakır, which has such a long history in terms of press and is called "Turkey's third press center after Istanbul and Ankara", especially by regional journalists, has always been the center of attention of the press due to its political atmosphere and strategic location. In Diyarbakır, which -unfortunately- finds its place in the media mostly with terrorist news, chaos and turmoil, practicing journalism has always had its own difficulties. We think that such studies, which are described as 'oral press history' and convey these difficulties to the readers through the information, memories, observations and experiences gained from the mouths of retired and working journalists, are valuable. Thus, knowledge, memories, observations and experiences that are relevant to people's lives are prevented from being lost. Diyarbakır Oral Press History is important because it contains words, anecdotes and memories that are sometimes deemed unnecessary to be written, ignored, thought to be of no value, neglected, and assumed to be 'everyone knows'. The book is also a valuable work for readers who want to get to know the sociology, culture, economy and press life of the region closely. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
