Rachel Vinrace, who lost her mother at a young age and grew up under the supervision of her aunts, was twenty-four when she set off on a South American voyage on her father's Euphrosyne ship, accompanied by her uncle Richard and her aunt Helen, who taught her "how to live." is old.
