Since the mid-1960s, social movements that turned to violence, that is, armed struggle, emerged simultaneously in many parts of the world. These movements generally arose from student and worker groups, as an objection to the existing political, economic or cultural order, and over time they turned to armed struggle. Violence and social movements expert Isabelle Sommier here specifically addresses industrialized, capitalist and democratic countries and the armed organizations in these countries: the Red Brigades (BR) in Italy, the Red Army Faction (RAF) in Germany, the Japanese Red Army in Japan. Army (ARJ), Direct Action (AD) in France, Weather Underground Organization (WUO) in the USA. Revolutionary Violence thus created a connection between the political situation in these countries, where the culture of democracy was experienced in the most developed form, and the simultaneous action of young university students, from Japan to the USA, to save society at the expense of their lives, in those days when the communication channels that exist today were unthinkable. We present this important work, which sheds light on the direction of the revolutionary violence of the left that re-emerged after May 68, with the foreword of Ömer Laçiner.
