On the State
"The state cannot be reduced neither to an apparatus of power at the service of the rulers nor to a neutral place where conflicts are absorbed: In highly differentiated societies, the state constitutes the form of collective belief that structures the whole of social life."
-Bourdieu-
On the State was created by compiling the notes of the lectures given by the world-famous French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu at the Collège de France between 1989 and 1992. The state is a subject of analysis that is extremely central to the author's sociological analysis, but is rarely perceived as such. This book is Bourdieu's only work that examines the state problem, which he indirectly addresses in his other works, by placing it at the center of his analysis. "Difficult questions begin to emerge at this point. The reason why easy words can be said about the state is that the producers and recipients of the discourse about the state have a somewhat anarchist tendency, both in stance and tradition, and have a socially established tendency to rebel against the authorities."
-Bourdieu-
