Jean Genet is here with The Sailor, which is described as his "masterpiece". While inviting us to the aesthetics of violence, it again drags human nature into its vast darkness. With his usual arrogance, radicality and endless freedom in his narrative... The author, who displays his own self by fragmenting, dispersing and distilling in his other books, for the first time in this novel, describes the process of fragmentation, disintegration and distillation himself by objectifying himself by calling him "It", keeping a distance between himself and the text. He expresses it by keeping his distance and alienating himself from the text. Genet, the great man of letters, who helped a generation of writers to form and feel free, who left a bright path for those who came after them, who is more understood and admired with each passing year, and who is the creator of unforgettable works that resist time, chose Brest, France, as the setting for this novel. . It conveys the drama of its main protagonist, Querelle, with its colourful, powerful and poetic narrative, in an environment populated by sailors, homosexuals and criminals, where police officers and brothel bosses also appear from time to time. Gay sailor Querelle gets involved in illegal activities and murders among these people on the edge of life. Querelle means "fight". When used as a male name, it also acquires meanings such as angelhood, purity and innocence, with an inversion specific to Genet. But what is in question here is not innocence per se, but an innocence that emanates from the crime itself. An innocence that invites people to think about the crime in terms of themselves, not others.
In this novel, the author assumes the role of spokesperson for homosexuality, theft and betrayal in an obscene manner. But, in Jean Cocteau's words, "with an obscenity that is not obscene at all." Genet, who entered literature as a "scandalous writer" and whose works seem to have lost none of their power over the years, actually did nothing but "present an example of modern beauty", according to Witold Gombrowicz. Let us also remind you that an unforgettable movie of The Sailor was shot in 1982 by another genius, the famous director of German cinema, Fassbinder.
