Sea Wolf
We continue with The Sea Wolf, an example of symbolist naturalism in all of Jack London's works. Humphrey Van Weyden, who comes from a wealthy family, is rescued by Wolf Larsen, the captain of the schooner named Ghost, after his shipwreck. As a peaceful "gentleman", he will find himself in the violent "real world" when he enters Larsen's service against his will; This experience will transform him from an elitist intellectual into a brave man of action.
The conflict between Van Weyden and Larsen is not only a fight in which the weak are crushed, but also a war of ideas. The contrast between the idealism of Van Weyden, who sees life as "sacred", and the materialism of Wolf Larsen, who has no concern other than existence, is repeated throughout the novel, making The Sea Wolf a work that can be read at different levels.
