Değirmen-Türk Edebiyat Klasikleri 34
Değirmen is Sabahattin Ali's first story book. Among these early essays, love is the dominant theme. His emotional and dreamy narration is accompanied by a clear language. At the same time, a realistic, socialist attitude is perceived. The first examples of that powerful narrative that determines humans and nature intertwined begin to appear in Değirmen.
Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) graduated from Istanbul Teachers' School in 1928. After working as a secondary school teacher in Yozgat, he passed the exam held by the Ministry of Education and went to Germany in 1928. He studied for two years in Potsdam and Berlin; While he was teaching German in Aydın and Konya, he was arrested for political reasons. He spent 3 months in Aydın and 1 year in Konya and Sinop prisons. After his release, he worked as a German teacher in Ankara, and as a translator, teacher and dramaturg at Ankara State Conservatory. He was appointed to the ministry in 1945. He went to Istanbul in 1946. In the same year, he started publishing the weekly humor newspaper Markopaşa with Aziz Nesin. Many of his articles published here were investigated. After a 4-month prison sentence, he started trucking in 1948. Feeling uneasy about being constantly watched, he tried to escape from Kırklareli to Bulgaria with his truck and was killed in the process. The location of his grave is still unknown. He started his career in literature with poems, stories and criticism in magazines such as Çağlayan, Servetifünun, Resimli Ay, Yedi Meşale and Varlık. His first novel, Yusuf of Kuyucak (1937), was followed by The Devil Within Us (1940) and Madonna in a Fur Coat (1943). In his works, he dealt with the Anatolian people left to their own devices, the village-city contradiction, and people who died, were murdered, and were imprisoned under harsh economic conditions. He became one of the pioneers of our realistic literary movement by depicting his characters by focusing on the conflicts arising from the social structure. The stories of Sabahattin Ali, who produced works in many genres, have a special importance in his art. More than 60 of his stories were published in books such as Değirmen (1935), Kağnı (1936), Ses (1937), Yeni Dünya (1943), and Sırça Köşk (1947). We will continue to include Sabahattin Ali's works in our Turkish Literature Classics Series.
