De Profundis
Oscar Wilde's close friendship with Alfred Douglas, who created either a scandal or a trend with every action he took throughout his turbulent life and whose every word became a proverb, made Douglas' father, the Marquess of Queensberry, very angry. Wilde, who was accused of homosexuality by the Marquis, refused to escape despite the warnings of his friends to escape to France, so he was arrested and brought to court, and despite his brilliant testimony, he was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison. The letter he wrote to Douglas from Reading Prison, where he spent most of his sentence, was full of accusations against the young man for dragging him into debauchery and then not protecting him. Wilde's letter did not reach Douglas, but it reached its real reader after it was published under the name De Profundis in 1905.
We present this famous letter from the history of literature, accompanied by the memoirs of André Gide, the author's close friend and admirer, and with Roza Hakmen's unique translation.
