Someone must have slandered Josef K., because one morning he was arrested even though he had done nothing wrong. The cook of Mrs. Grubach, the landlady of the rented room, who brings breakfast to Josef K. every morning around eight o'clock, did not come this time. This has never happened before. K. waited for a while, without lifting his head from the pillow, he saw the old woman sitting opposite the house and watching him with unusual curiosity, but then, finding this situation strange and feeling hungry at the same time, he rang the bell.
Josef K. is arrested early one morning, obviously the victim of slander. This argument could be interpreted as an indirect reference to anti-Semitic cases, but the problematic of slander is not pursued in the novel. No explanation is given to him about this measure, which does not lead to his imprisonment, but rather creates a kind of threat hanging over his head - because he can fulfill his occupations. He is tried by a partially “tolerant” court that prohibits any contact with its judges and does not accept a defense. This court, whose hierarchy extends to infinity and whose behavior is inexplicable and unpredictable, claims to be infallible and is completely beyond the reach of the defendants…
