Darwin is a scientist who radically changed our knowledge about humans, dethroned humans from their throne in nature and included them among other animals, and for this reason, his works were subject to heated scientific, social, moral and religious debates both in his time and today, and were interpreted in many different ways. George Levine offers us an interpretation of Darwin in Darwin Loves You, but his is an interpretation that deals with Darwin himself in his personal aspects rather than the theory of evolution. Instead of the rigid, cold, emotionless scientist that comes to mind when Darwin is mentioned, he is a compassionate nature lover whose life and science are intertwined, who continues to observe with the sensitivity of a scientist even in his most emotional moments, and who, on the other hand, betrays his feelings even in his most objective observations, especially his astonishment at the miracles hidden in the details of nature. Levine puts it; A natural scientist who was not immune from the prejudices of the time he lived in, but was able to go beyond them thanks to his scientific mentality and open-mindedness.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: George Levine is an American literary critic and academician, born in 1931. Completing his higher education and doctorate at the University of Minnesota, Levine entered Rutgers University in 1968 as head of the literature department. Although his academic interest was originally in Victorian culture and literature, he always produced creative works by blending different disciplines, especially science and literature, in his work. He taught at various universities in the USA, England and Italy.
