Written by Aram Andonian and one of the most important sources on the Armenian Genocide, especially on the events in the Syrian deserts in 1916, The Armenian Genocide as Testimony of Naim Bey, Chief Secretary of the Aleppo Immigrants Directorate, includes handwritten notes that Naim Bey gave to Andonian, information compiled by Andonian, telegrams, official Ottoman documents and the testimonies of first-degree witnesses. In Andonian’s words, the book, which gives “the voice of the victims that is missing in Armenian martyrdom writing”, also has a special importance and value in that the testimonies were collected only a few years after the deportation and massacres.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Andonyan was born in 1879 in the Kazancı district of Istanbul, the son of a fisherman's family known as Andon Ağa. After the Naregyan and Esayan Armenian schools, he was educated at a French school. He caught the attention of Armenian intellectuals Krikor Zohrab and Hırant Asadur at the Arevelk [East] newspaper and turned to journalism upon their encouragement. He edited the weekly newspapers Dzağig [Flower] and Luys [Light]. In addition to novels and stories, he also wrote humorous works. After 1915, he settled in France and served as the director of the Nubaryan Library (1928-1951). He passed away in Paris on December 23, 1951.
