In the 1945-1950 period, when Turkey stepped into multi-party life, it was not just politics that was 'opened up'. The pressure accumulated during the establishment of the Republic, the Single Party period and the anxious days of the Second World War decreased, and there was a revival in daily life and social relations. The world has come a little closer, 'topics' have diversified, popular culture has begun to flourish with all its charm. Levent Cantek defines this period of 'awakening', when passions and concerns flourished together, as the 'Age of Puberty of the Republic'. In this book, Cantek, whose mastery of studies on popular culture we know, deals with the heated debates caused by puberty among intellectuals and 'opinion leaders', through the discussions reflected in the press. Essentially, these are discussions about lifestyle and morality. And eventually, debates based on deep concern about 'excessive modernization'... Furrowed eyebrows at the youth of the time, 'bobsstyle' snobbery, and socialite attitudes... The heated debate on whether cinema is an institution of entertainment or education, especially with Egyptian films with Turkish lyrics and songs. controversies... Controversies over 'degenerate' and 'pure' music, fueled by the issue of traditional Turkish playing on the radio... Concerns about crime and its presentation, on the occasion of murder news... Reactions aroused by the visibility of country people in the public sphere... and 'extreme The communist bogeyman as the epitome of the anxiety of 'modernity'...19/20. Levent Cantek also focuses a lot on the 'controlling generation' role played by the intellectuals born at the turn of the century, with their tutelage and guardianship attitudes. The Puberty of the Republic not only sheds light on the exceptional vitality of the 1945-50 period; Considering the discussions about the 'obstacles' of Turkish society in leaving puberty and coming of age, it also mirrors the problems faced by every generation in coping with timeliness and modernity.
