“With the 1923 elections, the sociopolitical diversity in the Turkish Grand National Assembly also disappeared, and Ankara, which strengthened its legitimacy, experienced a paradigmatic change in its perspective on the Kurdish issue within the new conditions. Within this framework, the declaration of the Republic administration in the new global and regional plane shaped by Lausanne is the turning point of modern Turkey and therefore the turning point of the modern Kurdish problem.” When the “Kurdish issue/problem” is mentioned today, it also refers to a multidimensional political problem and rather, evaluations are made based on the current projections of the problem. However, there are important historical references, turning points and paths behind the current projections. In his book Kurds on the Way to the Republic, Sinan Hakan continues to trace the historical developments that led to the emergence of many problems whose results we still see today. After his previous book (Kurds While Turkey Was Being Established), which ended with the opening of the Grand National Assembly (1916-1920), this time he brings the tense and volatile relationship between the Kurdish tribal leaders and political actors and the GNA, whose legitimacy was increasingly strengthened by gaining gains in the international arena, to the foundation of the Republic, by making use of the official correspondence of the important actors of the period, military archive sources, and newspaper archives. He continues his claim that the national and international tension lines that contributed to the shaping of the Kurdish issue can only be understood in interaction with local dynamics.
