Republican Islam
"Republican Islam is a political issue related to institutions, the understanding of citizenship and nationality, the definition of public space and civil society in relation to the state, freedoms and human rights. More importantly, it is the issue of creating a morally and politically republican subject." Although millions of Muslims around the world live under the republican regime, there is a belief that Islam and the republic, or Islam and democracy, cannot co-exist and are even opposite concepts. In fact, the republic is neither an absolute supplier of democracy nor completely free from democracy. There are many republican regimes that cannot be claimed to be democratic, and secularism often legitimizes authoritarianism. So, can Islam be democratic?
Turkey, Iran and Senegal... Each of them has its own republic and has internalized its own understanding of Islam, resulting in very different republics. But Islam alone is not enough to explain the diversity of republics in these countries. In this study, Jean-François Bayart focuses on these three Islamic countries governed by republics and examines the relations between Islam and the republic, the republic and democracy, and democracy and Islam.
