The Tyranny of the Majority - 22 Books in Brief Classics Description
French jurist, thinker and historian Tocqueville made a long trip to the United States in the early 1830s. He compiled his views and analyses, based on his observations during this "field work" about American democracy, political system and social structure, in a book titled Democracy in America, which was published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840 and became one of the canonical works of political science literature.
The Tyranny of the Majority consists of selected chapters from this book. In these texts, Tocqueville argues that the passion for equality, which is the distinctive feature of modern democracies, can become a threat to freedom and may end in the tyranny of the majority. Analyzes the effects of the unlimited power of the majority in America on the opinions of the people, the character of the nation and public administration.
