Childhood, Early Youth, Youth
Childhood, Early Youth, Youth, written by Tolstoy in his twenties, is the author's first published work and his most autobiographical book.
In Childhood, Youth, Youth, Tolstoy explores the inner world of Nikolenka, the son of a wealthy family, based on his own life. As we read about the relationship of the hero, whom we have witnessed growing and developing from a young age, with his private teacher, his beloved mother, his cold and distant father, and his siblings, we see how his personality is shaped and emerges in the background. While talking about the times she spent with her friends, her dreams, her opportunities and obstacles, Nikolenka actually shares her struggle to understand the world. Although it is the first novel of a young writer, the meticulousness and richness of detail in character drawings and the intensity of emotion in the narration have given Childhood, Early Youth, Youth an extraordinary success. "There has never been any writer who has surpassed Tolstoy in expressing the unique quality and taste of a feeling."
