Lined Margin Notes
How are the socially, economically and culturally excluded, marginalized, those living in slums, the poor in Turkey portrayed in humor magazines, comics and stories? The book compiled by Levent Cantek, whom we know for his studies on comic book culture, includes studies showing how the class divisions that have deepened in the last twenty-five years are reflected in the social imagination.
Funda Şenol and Levent Cantek look at how the slum is depicted in comics. Levent Gönenç offers a striking comparative framework for today with his review of Mikrop magazine published in the late 1970s. A lively analysis of today can be found in Serpil Aydos's article, which deals with the reflections of the cultural and class consequences of the economic transformation in the last twenty-five years on LeMan. Can Yalçınkaya takes a look at the representations of Cihangir district in L-Manyak and Lombak magazines. Gökçen Ertuğrul-Apaydın traces the meaning mechanisms related to the body, masculinity and sexuality in today's comic strip humor magazines. There are two articles in the book about Kurds as a marginal category: Aydan Çelik examines Ender Özkahraman's Orası Hikâyeleri, and Mesut Yeğen examines Doğan Güzel's character Qırıx.
Articles about the works of Ergin Ergönültaş, an artist who built his own comic book world with those on the margins, constitute a separate chapter in the book. Şenol Bezci, Sevilay Çelenk and Funda Şenol read Ergönültaş's Terso story from three windows: The perception of the slum, the victim-heroes, the isolation and helplessness of poverty... Gürsel Korat and Tanıl Bora, based on another story by Ergönültaş, tell the story of the poor/poor people. they reflect on their representation in comics and popular literary discourse.
