Walt Whitman (1819-1892): Walt Whitman, one of the leading and founding poets of the American poetry tradition, is the spokesman of the street, the crowds and the individuals who make up them. Whitman, who brought the concepts of democracy, nationhood, body and sexuality to poetry in America, is one of the first modernist poets. The first edition of Leaves of Grass was published in 1855 and consisted of a preface and 12 untitled poems. Whitman added the poems he wrote throughout his life to his book and prepared new editions many times. He spent his last days editing the last edition of Leaves of Grass. In this edition, called the deathbed edition, the book, including the poet's article titled "A Look Backwards from the End of the Journey", was 438 pages and consisted of around 400 poems. All the poems that make up Grass Leaves were collected in four volumes while being published in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series. The book you have is the first of these volumes.
