Cegerxwîn's Life and Understanding of Poetry
Cegerxwîn's real name is Şeyhmus. He was born in the village of Hesarê in 1903. When he was born, his family was very poor and miserable. Like many other Kurds, they left their father's home in Bêkendê village and migrated to Hesarê due to financial difficulties.
When World War I started in 1914, he was 11 years old. While he was not old enough to enjoy life, he first learned the ways of migration and escape, like his parents and other ancestors, and like other Kurds, he moved from one captivity to another, settling in a village of Amudê in Syrian territory. After a while, he lost his mother in that village, in that foreign land. This is one of the events that makes Şeyhmus' heart bleed and he can no longer stay in Amudê. He leaves there with his sisters and brothers and returns to his beloved village, Hesarê. But this time the fear of the gendarmerie haunts him and he returns to Amudê with his brothers Asya and Xelîl.
When Şeyhmus was very young, he went through very difficult times and wandered around the villages and cities of Iran, Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan. In his words, “the Kurdistan of the Kurds, that is, a Kurdistan torn into pieces,” was before his eyes. He was concerned about the Kurdistan cause and it hurt his heart. After that day, as some people said, the name "Şeyhmus" would no longer suit him. Because he suffered from the troubles of his own people, he took the name Cegerxwîn and became a cherished poet of the Kurdish nation.
