Candide
Candide, written in 1759 in opposition to the logic of the German philosopher Leibniz, "The world we live in is the best of all worlds", is one of Voltaire's most important works. After a well-intentioned young man named Candide is expelled from the castle where he lives in Germany, he falls into the middle of great disasters in Europe, Africa and Asia. He is thrown from place to place among earthquakes, the danger of the Inquisition, syphilis, and murders. He will never forget the teachings of his teacher Pangloss, who said that we live in the best of all possible worlds, in these adventures, but he cannot help but despair when he sees the state of the world and the evil of people. It is a work that extends from a castle in Germany to a miserable life, from Eldorado, the land of dreams, to Istanbul, mocking optimism and meanwhile questioning life and its purpose.
