What is Contemporary Art?
Historians have been arguing for years about what "contemporary art", which expresses no history, means. For now, it seems to be agreed that "contemporary art" is a concept that signals the end of modern art. Everyone also agrees that this concept corresponds to a period, rather than an event happening in the present, and that this period is globality. In the contemporary period, art evolves into communication and finance, putting an end to modernism and the avant-garde; even to postmodernism, which is defined as the pastiche of modernism. There is one truth that art shows in our time, and that is the market. So, in a sense, "contemporary art" is the art of the end of art. But perhaps it is the art of a completely different beginning that will tell us new truths and prophecies. This possibility transforms the discussions on contemporary art into a search for contemporary criticism and politics, saving it from being seen as merely a medium of hegemonic submission. As Giorgio Agamben stated, perhaps "contemporary" means criticism.
What is Contemporary Art? An introduction to the ongoing debates on both contemporary art and "contemporaryness". Therefore, it focuses on texts that examine these issues in an ontological and semantic context, rather than with specific problems and examples.
