Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593): English playwright, poet and translator. He was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. His intelligence and talents enabled him to receive a good education with a scholarship. After completing his education at Cambridge, he went to London, where he completed his plays, which earned him the title of the greatest tragedian of the Elizabethan period, and also wrote Latin poems and made translations. He was prosecuted on various grounds throughout his life. In his short twenty-nine-year life, the plays he produced, using free scale and all the possibilities of the language, radically changed the English theatre.
He inspired the playwrights who came after him, especially his contemporary William Shakespeare.
In one of his most remarkable works, Tamerlane the Great, Marlowe transcends drama and enters the gates of the epic.
