Bütün Şiirlerinden Seçmeler
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is one of the greatest representatives of the 20th century Western poetry. The city of Prague, where the poet was born, was within the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time. Rilke, who grew up in a period when the cosmopolitan culture of Central Europe was at its peak, focused his whole life on the pursuit of "searching for poetry in poetry".
His two trips to Russia with Lou Salome in 1899 and 1900 and his meeting with Tolstoy there hold an important place in this search. The friendship he established with Rodin and Cézane in Paris also enriched his emotional world. Again, his meeting with Hölderlin and German idealism are the strong veins that feed Rilke's poetry.
Stefan Zweig, in a lecture he gave on Rilke in London in 1936, describes the poet as follows: "None of the rich and successful poets of our time was as free as Rilke, who did not tie himself to anywhere. He had neither habits, nor an address, nor, in fact, a homeland; Italy." He could have lived just as easily in France or Austria, and meeting him was almost always a matter of chance.
This selection was compiled by Ahmet Cemal from Rilke's books called Life and Songs, The Book of Pictures, The Book of Hours, A Song on the Love and Death of the Standard-bearer Christoph Rilke, New Poems, Early Poems, First Poems, Duino Elegies and Sonnet to Orpheus.
