My room was far away. A park appeared in front of me. I took out the apple. It was not as if I had taken it from the basket, it was a large red and green apple. I threw it into the grass across from me. I had the same itch inside me as when I saw the smoke coming out of a tin pipe. A man sitting on the couch next to me was looking at me: as if he saw me, as if I were there.

Yusuf Atılgan had won an award in the competition held by Tercüman newspaper with the stories he wrote in his early youth and later published his stories in literary magazines. He published his only book of stories, Beyond the Bodur Minare, in 1960. The author’s entire collection of stories was first published in 1992 with the title Activist; this book, titled All Stories and including the children’s stories in Bread in Hand, Milk in Breast, was published in 2000. The stories of this great author of our literature will give the reader clues about the atmosphere and geography of his novels.
