Bucknam Pasha
The tradition of consultancy in the Ottoman Navy lasted until the 1900s. Among the many foreigners who served as consultants in this process, an American was encountered: Ransford Dodsworth Bucknam. Bucknam Pasha, also known as the "Merchant Captain" in the navy, served as a captain as well as during World War II. He also serves as Abdulhamid's personal aide. Bucknam Pasha's naval service began with the cruiser Mecidiye, the construction of which was completed in Philadelphia in 1904, brought to Istanbul and continued until the summer of 1909. It plays an important role in purchasing and bringing a large number of warships. Rauf Orbay, who served as his aide and translator for three and a half years of this period, gives a special place to Bucknam Pasha in his memoirs. The life of Bucknam Pasha, who served as lieutenant colonel, colonel and admiral in the Ottoman navy, was closely followed by the American and Canadian press. After returning to civilian life, Bucknam Pasha did not leave the country he was accustomed to and loved and lived in Istanbul with his wife, where he started business. This book, which is the product of an extensive archive study by Ender Kuntsal, provides detailed information about the activities of both Bucknam Pasha and the Ottoman Navy in that period.
