"Now I'm wondering; did the administration and academics of this school teach these students this job? How to use a slingshot, which type to use? Or how to burn car tires, when, in what environment, and how? Or how to make a molotov, how to throw it to whom? Were they taught?

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said these about the student protests at METU in December 2012, to which the police responded with "disproportionate violence". University students are one of the important subjects of social opposition in Turkey, as in many parts of the world. Sometimes dissatisfaction with the social order, sometimes disappointment created by the deep gap between the university's promises and reality, sometimes the rebelliousness, excitement and radicalism of the youth, all together form the uninterrupted dynamic of the student movement.
The oppressive attitude of the state and the government towards students constitutes a tradition at least as strong as the tradition of student opposition in Turkey! Prime Minister Erdogan's statement is not exceptional: The approach that sees "innocent student incidents" as the seeds of "anarchy and terror" and that they should be strangled at their source has become ingrained almost like a secret constitutional article.

The investigation by investigative journalists Gökçer Tahincioğlu and Kemal Göktaş provides a balance sheet of the repressive regime against the student movement during the 11-year AKP government. From the brutal intolerance of all levels of government, to the constant use of "disproportionate force" by the police, to the routine of the judiciary treating them as "terrorists" and "enemies"...
