Bonobo and the Atheist
De Waal, who overturned prejudices about human nature in The Monkey Within Us, this time builds a unique argument by carrying his observations into the context of evolutionary biology and moral philosophy. He argues that what is called human morality does not fall from the sky, but "comes from within": "Moral behavior neither begins nor ends with religion; it is the product of evolution." Focusing on the bonds between us and animals, de Waal tries to explain our morality from bottom to top. He argues that religion's role in morality is a secondary one, emerging in addition to our natural instincts such as cooperation and empathy. And in this context, he questions what role religion plays in the functioning of society today.
