Bodhiçaryavatara - Introduction to the Path of Enlightenment - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description Şāntideva (685-763): It is said that he was born in Saurāshtra, today's Gujarat, as the son of King Kalyānavarman. He took lessons from Cayadeva at Nālanda Monastery in Bihar state and followed the Mahāyāna branch of Buddhism. The aim of Şāntideva, who wrote Shikshāsamuççhaya, meaning "Comprehension of All Teachings", Sūtrasamuççhaya, meaning "Comprehension of All Sūtras", and Bodhiçaryāvatāra, meaning "Entry to the Path of Enlightenment", is to attain enlightenment as a bodhisattva, and while striving for this, to ensure the enlightenment of all living beings for whom he has compassion. In Bodhiçaryāvatāra the author has strove more towards this goal than in his other two works.
