Byzantium 2
Byzantium was governed by autocracy, the ruling emperor was the equal of the Apostles, God's representative on earth, a semi-divine being who held the lives of all his subjects in his hand. Some of these emperors were heroes, some were monsters; but they were never faint. For that reason alone, writing this book has been a constant pleasure, but also, in a modest sense, the payment of a debt. Our civilization has never adequately appreciated how much it owes to the Eastern Empire. If it were not for this Eastern Fortress of Christianity, Europe's VII. century to the Sassanid armies, VIII. Would he have a chance against the army of the Baghdad Caliph in the 19th century? What language would we speak and what god would we worship today? Our debt in the cultural field is also very large. After the barbarian invasions and the fall of the emperor in Rome, the light of learning in Western Europe was extinguished, except for the flickering flames in the occasional monastery. It was on the shores of the Bosphorus that it continued to burn and preserve the classical heritage. Much of our knowledge of antiquity—especially Greek and Latin literature and Roman law—would have been lost forever were it not for the scholars and scribes of Constantinople.
