A Novel of Hesitation, one of the works in which Peyami Safa reached his peak as a novelist, is about the hesitations and vacillations of human beings who are caught between belief and denial, individual and social tendencies, self-destruction, and creative ambitions and loves after World War I. With its novel fiction written within a novel and its structure bearing deep traces from Peyami Safa's own life, A Novel of Tereddüdün depicts the fatigue of living during the armistice years and after the war, the upheaval of social values, the breaking of ties with the past, moral crisis, material and spiritual misery, nothingness. The pain of not being able to fully connect is based on people's hesitation between believing and denying, building and destroying, loving and hating, good and evil, rebelling and submitting, dying and living.
