Diary of a Simpleton - Modern Classics 117
Arkady Averchenko was one of the Russian immigrants who went to Istanbul after the Bolsheviks invaded Crimea in 1920. In The Diary Book of a Simpleton, he describes the days he spent in Istanbul and his next stop in Prague. It uses Istanbul as a backdrop while focusing on the difficulties faced by immigrants, including noble and wealthy Russians who had to work to make a living for the first time in their lives. It does not touch on the general atmosphere of occupied Istanbul, where life is very difficult not only for immigrants but also for locals, nor does it compliment the beauty of the city or the historical treasures it holds. He conveys, in a very humorous way, the struggle for survival of the Russians living around Galata and Pera, where the foreign population is concentrated.
