Portrait of a Woman
Henry James is one of the most important names of the modern novel. Although he was born in America and brought international reputation to the American novel, he spent most of his life in England and Europe. This feature is clearly evident in one of his masterpieces, "Portrait of a Woman". The heroine of the novel, Isabel, is a young American girl. He comes to Europe to live with his aunt, where he falls into the corrupt world of people, most of whom are Europeanized Americans. Henry James reveals the dark side of a world he knows closely, in the adventure of a person. The novel is not content with understanding the formation of a personality; It is also important in terms of Roman technique. It skillfully combines realistic novel narration with the "point of view" technique, which we can call James' "invention".
