Two Women in a Term
Oya Baydar and Melek Ulagay... Two women who witnessed the adventure of the world and Turkey from the 1940s to the present day, and not only witnessed but also lived in the events. They tell about youth, hope, revolutionary struggle, leftist organizations, prisons, torture, the pain of losing loved ones, refugeehood, exile, returning home, and their lives that were thrown from Istanbul to Palestinian camps, from the Southeast to European cities.
May 27, the events of '68, the rise of the left, May 1, the coups of March 12 and September 12, massacres, the beginnings of the Kurdish movement, counter-guerrilla, America and Israel's plans to destroy the Palestinian people in the Middle East, the events in the Eastern Bloc. They witnessed life, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the socialist system, and many other events in recent history.
They have closely known many people whose names are known in today's Turkey and the world, who are still in important positions, on the political stage or at decision points in various areas of life. They experienced friendship, comradeship, love, problems within the organization and the party with intense emotions. And now, as they tell of those days, coming to terms with themselves, the past, and history, they are calling out to the future.
"History should not be written only by men, history should not be the official history of men focused on politics rather than people. Ours is a beginning, and the mirror in which we reflect the past is our own mirror. We hope there will be more to come, and others will hold their own mirrors to our history," say Melek Ulagay and Oya Baydar.
"So many people have passed through our lives, so many bittersweet events, those that were told and those that could not be told, those that were remembered and those that were not remembered, those that we forgot, those that we wanted to forget but could not forget or those that we were afraid of forgetting. Ours is; with different emotions, different impulses, in different environments but towards the same goal, flowing without intersecting like parallel lines. Ask for two lives, two women's stories..."
