Gustave Flaubert's first novel, Memoirs of a Madman, written in 1838, focuses on the bourgeois society, in which the author himself is a member, and its fake society. A critical look at their relationships, sometimes a sarcastic satire.

All the wounds of an impossible but passionate platonic love, all the crises of a conscious loneliness that has become a worship, both physically and spiritually. The novel, in which all the turmoils of development are intertwined, also has autobiographical features.
