Binbir Gece Mektupları
The stories in the One Thousand and One Nights Letters take the reader to a surreal space where dreams, daydreams, the believable and the unbelievable are intertwined, just like in the Arabian Nights. With a very free expression, while opening the doors to the inner worlds of people we are strangers to but find close to ourselves, it also frees the emotions, obsessions, fears and fantasies that are kept under lock and key within ourselves. The intertwined stories show that there are other stories behind each of our stories. Each story creates its own reality, and we move forward within that reality by embracing that story. As Murat Gülsoy takes us through that endless background behind the stories, we think that maybe what we are reading is our story. Just like the Arabian Nights that Scheherazade tells in order to postpone her death, Murat Gülsoy's letters are perhaps the letters he writes every night to someone he does not know who he is, in order to alleviate his fear of death. The words of the narrator in one of the stories, 'As I write, I pass into another world', may be the equivalent of 'As I read, I pass into another world' for us; Who knows?
