Bin Yüz Bir Giz
A Thousand and One Secrets begins with the artistic dream of Salihli's idealist mayor, Zarif Bey; As soon as he takes office, Zarif Bey announces that he wants to bring a theater to Salihli. His aim is to create a contemporary Salihli that is intertwined with art; to show that contemporary theater can be done in Anatolia as well, to enable the people to meet art and artists... However, ideals are not always met with the same good intentions in this society... Indeed, first of all, his own party members look at him with sarcasm...
First published in 1993, A Thousand and One Secrets is a parody of a small town; municipality officials, small tradesmen, visionless but ambitious people settled in state institutions, townspeople who are completely far from art, young people, housewives... Aslankara observes all this crowd in his novel and stages a play that occasionally makes one laugh, but eventually leaves the reader alone with serious questions and, of course, sadness.
