Randolph Carter embarks on an epic quest to the world beyond the wall of sleep, in pursuit of the rich and mysterious sunset city. When he prays to the dream gods to make this magical city known to him, he gets no response and can no longer dream. With a brave decision, he decides to go to Kadath, where the gods live, and beg in person. But no one has been to Kadath before, and no one even knows how to get there. Randolph Carter still won't stop trying.

Lovecraft started this short novel in 1926, when he wrote the story "The Silver Key". The "sunset city" that Randolph Carter sought was not in the land of dreams, but in Lovecraft's memories of his real life in Boston, where he lived.
